Can You Choose Your Cruise Cabin Location? Sometimes — Here’s How It Really Works

A lot of cruisers—especially first-timers—wonder whether they can choose their exact cabin on a ship. The simple answer is that you usually can, but there’s one big exception: when you book a guarantee cabin. That’s the one situation where the cruise line, not you, decides where you’ll sleep.

When you book an assigned cabin, you pick the exact room number. You get the location you want, whether that’s midship for less motion, near the spa, away from elevators, or nowhere near a nightclub. It’s predictable and straightforward. The only downside is price—it’s generally a little more expensive, and if the category you want is sold out, you’re stuck.

A guarantee cabin works differently. Instead of choosing the room, you choose the category—inside, oceanview, balcony, etc.—and the cruise line picks your actual cabin. This is the only time you can’t select your cabin location. Some people love this option because it’s cheaper and there’s a real chance of landing an upgrade. You’re guaranteed at least the category you paid for, but you can end up higher if someone cancels or upgrades. Cruise lines also sometimes use guarantees to hold your reservation even if the category is technically sold out, and if a spot opens, you slide right in.

Of course, guarantees come with trade-offs. You have zero control, so you can wind up in a spot you wouldn’t have chosen on your own—under the pool deck, over a theater, far forward, far aft, or tucked next to a crew door. If cabin location matters to you even a little, a guarantee is not the right play. But if your priority is saving money or you’re chasing a possible upgrade, it can be a smart gamble.

MSC adds its own twist to this system. Their Bella experience is always sold as a guarantee. If you book Bella, you can’t choose your cabin number at all. You need to upgrade to Fantastica (or higher) if you want control over your room placement. It’s something a lot of travelers miss when comparing prices.

So what’s the best choice? It really comes down to your personality.
If you want control and hate surprises, pick your exact cabin.
If you’re price-focused or open to a little bit of luck, a guarantee can work in your favor.

Just be honest with yourself about how much cabin location will matter once you’re onboard—because on a cruise, where you sleep can make a bigger difference than people expect.
